president@penobscotflyfishers.com Speaker for May 1 Danny Legere Well known guide and outdoorsman in the Moosehead area. The topic is " Windows of Opportunity." I was Born in Sanford, Me. 1952 - Son of Hector & Betty Legere, who loved to fish, hunt & camp. I grew up at the end of a dead-end road in Alfred, Maine. The woods around us were my playground. My mother and father loved to fish and camp, we fished and camped all over the North Maine Woods. Every spring as soon as the ice was out on Moosehead Lake, they would take me out of grammar school and head for Moosehead for a week of camping and fishing. . Hunting was a big part of our lives as well. With miles of woods surrounding our home we hunted right out the back door. I attended UMO and graduated in 1972 with an associate degree in forestry. The country was in a deep recession and forestry jobs were impossible to come by back then. So, I ran a chain saw cutting logs and pulp on private lots during the winter months. I had gotten my Registered Maine Guide License while in college and landed a summer job guiding fishermen out of Rideout’s Lodge & Cottages on East Grand Lake. A few years later I started a commercial fly-tying company called Maine Guide Enterprises and established nice accounts with L.L. Bean, Kittery Trading Post, Eddie Bauer and many Maine Mom & Pop places. That business allowed me to move to Greenville in 1982 and I open a fly-fishing store, The Maine Guide Fly Shop & Guide Service, on Main Street in Greenville. It wasn’t long before we became an Orvis dealer. I met my wonderful wife Penny a year later and she became my business partner. She raised two children and ran the store while I guided fishermen more than 100 days each summer and hunters each fall for 38 years. I have spent most of my adult life on the water and in the North Maine Woods. During that time, we got involved with Project Healing Waters, a national organization teaching disabled vets how to fly fishing and sending them on fly fishing adventures. Each summer 8 disabled vets were invited to Greenville for drift boat trips on the East Outlet and the West Branch. It was a humbling and rewarding experience that continued for 14 seasons. In 2015 I received the Maine Fish and Wildlife, Wiggie Robinson Legendary Maine Guide Award. I knew Wiggie and what this award meant. I never would have dreamed that I would be considered for this prestigious award. Penny is now retired, and I still guide some long-time fishing customers in Maine and do some backcountry charters out of Naples, Florida where we live in the winter. Election of Officers
